The Department of Physics was established as a Major Department in the year 1986 at the B.Sc Degree level and the department is now upgraded as a PG department from the academic year 2013-’14. Every year our under graduate students take-up National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) conducted at the All-India level by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) in the month of January. Students also attend summer internships in the Experimental Physics hosted by Institutions such as Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education and Research, Mumbai, Centre of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Bharathiar University, Gandhigram University, Madras University, SiTarc, IGCAR- Kalpakkam, Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad etc. Our department periodically organizes seminars, workshops, conferences and intercollegiate competitions and motivates the students to take up the research activities.

Outcome Based Education (OBE) has been introduced in the curriculum from the Academic Year 2017-2018.
The University Grants Commission had sanctioned Rs. 1 lakh to the Department to organize Two days National Conference on “Advanced Materials”(NCAM-2015)
Industrial visit to Space research Centers, Planetarium, Research labs, Research Centers.
Undergoing Summer Internship/ Fellowship programme for a period of six weeks for PG Programme.

Hands on training during internship programme in water analysis and materials testing in addition to the calibration and testing of mechanical and electrical instruments in the sixth semester at NABL Certified Institution.
Group projects for under graduate students have been introduced in the fifth semester.
Students undergo Internship training for a period not less than one week at the end of II &IV semester and submit report.
Motivate the Post Graduate students for applying funding projects from Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology, Chennai and also other agencies.
Facilitate the students to attend various National Level conferences and present their project work
Also facilitate students to take part in the Intercollegiate Competitions and achieve laurels.
Seminars/Workshops/Hands on Training/ Intercollegiate Competitions are conducted by the Department every year.

Programme Educational Objectives

PEO 1: Providing a quality education with a foundation level knowledge in the curricular contents tailored with theory and practice as an integrated approach of theory, tutorials and laboratory experiments with an augmented level of independent thinking to generate Graduates in Physics.
PEO 2: Exposing to new learning methods involving active learning experience as learning outside the class rooms, Internships, Industry/ Institutional visits, training programmes etc.
PEO 3: Implementing research culture and self-learning activity through dynamic curriculum and conducting workshops with Hands-on-Training, Seminars, Conferences, colloquiums, Guest Lectures etc. for knowledge dissemination and subject enlightenment.
PEO 4: Improving the employable skills by facilitating activities to enrich path towards higher learning and employment.
PEO 5: Mentoring the community as self-disciplined, socially concerned and environment friendly individuals.

Programme outcome

PO1: The completion of this UG programme will provide a fundamental knowledge in the core areas of Physics supported by the interdisciplinary courses such as Mathematics and Chemistry.
