The Department of Physics was established as a Major Department in the year 1986 at the B.Sc Degree level and the department is now upgraded as a PG department from the academic year 2013-’14. Every year our under graduate students take-up National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) conducted at the All-India level by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) in the month of January. Students also attend summer internships in the Experimental Physics hosted by Institutions such as Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education and Research, Mumbai, Centre of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Bharathiar University, Gandhigram University, Madras University, SiTarc, IGCAR- Kalpakkam, Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad etc. Our department periodically organizes seminars, workshops, conferences and intercollegiate competitions and motivates the students to take up the research activities.

DST-FIST (Level 0) Funding of equipments worth Rs.13,00,000/-
Funded under DBT- Star College scheme with a Non-recurring funding of Rs.5 lakhs and Recurring funding of Rs. 2 lakhs.
UG Students undergo Industry Internship during summer to places like Wind Mill Power generation units, Multi-specialty hospitals and electrical/ electronic industries.
During final year, UG students undergo Industry-Academia Internship in Skill Based Programme along with the Hands-On-Training for a period of 1 week to 10 days in the NABL Certified Institution
Entering into MoU with Industry
promoting the NSQF level certification for providing training/Knowledge sharing/fetching employment on mutually understandable themes.
UG students apply for Internship programmes organized on the topics such as Experimental Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Nuclear Physics, Summer school programmes advertised by Indian Academy of Sciences, VSRP promoted by TIFR, Mumbai, Programmes called by HBCSE, Mumbai, summer programme of ICTS, Bangalore, PTTS programme at Mangalore etc. and often secure selection to participate in the same.
Students participate in the National level examinations such as KVPY, JAM and NGPE
UG students participate in the On-line courses like NPTEL programmes and are registered in the SWAYAM portal also.
PG Students take up Summer Internship Programmes in the reputed Institutions like IGCAR, ARCI, Chennai or Hyderabad, Training at MIT campus of Anna University, Gandhigram Rural Institute, Bharathiar University Nano technology Lab for a period of minimum 2 weeks to maximum 8 weeks.
Conducting Industrial visits to places such as ISRO centers at Bangalore and Trivandrum, Radio Astronomy centre, Ooty, TN, Science and engineering Museum , Planetarium at various places, Raman Research Institute , IIT campus
Conducting National Seminars/Workshops/ Conferences on Current developments in Physics such as Advanced Nano materials, Lasers, Solar PV technology etc.
Conducting Inter collegiate Physics Fest “PRISM”
Maintaining strong Alumnae record in the Research Institutions in India and Abroad and also in the IT-Sector.
Faculty members participation in the Training programmes in Experimental Physics, Virtual Observatory, Astrophysics- Astronomical data analysis in optical and UV region, Lecture series in Quantum Mechanics and Statistical Mechanics by IASc, Bangalore, APT Kerala, IUCAA- Pune, IIA-Bangalore
Best Practices of the Department
The College and the Department is one of the centre for conducting NGPE National level examination by IAPT
The department is organizing Science programmes for school children every year by way of conducting Science exhibition, Science experiments demonstrations, Science Awareness programmes on celestial events as an Outreach activity.
Every year a National level conference/ Intercollegiate competitions/ Hands-On-Training/ is being conducted in the latest developments in Physics by inviting Eminent Scientists/Researchers from the reputed institutions.
UG Students undergo Hands-On-Training in Calibration and Testing in SITARC, a NABL certified institution for 1 week to10 days and obtain certificate.
As an unique method of evaluation for the laboratory experiments, the students are assessed for every lab sessions and are awarded marks based on their observations and recording.
National Science Day is celebrated every year apart from the days of Scientific importance.
Periodical coaching for the NET/SLET examinations both for the teachers as well as students
Motivating and facilitating the PG students to apply for projects funded by TNSCST.
Aiding the students for participating and presenting their research findings in the National conferences and encouraging them to participate in the Inter-collegiate events conducted by other institutions.
Programme Educational Objectives
PEO 1: Providing a quality education with a foundation level knowledge in the
curricular contents tailored with theory and practice as an integrated
approach of theory, tutorials and laboratory experiments with an augmented
level of independent thinking to generate Graduates in Physics.
PEO 2: Exposing to new learning methods involving active learning experience as learning outside the class rooms, Internships, Industry/ Institutional visits, training programmes etc.
PEO 3: Implementing research culture and self-learning activity through dynamic curriculum and conducting workshops with Hands-on-Training, Seminars, Conferences, colloquiums, Guest Lectures etc. for knowledge dissemination and subject enlightenment.
PEO 4: Improving the employable skills by facilitating activities to enrich path towards higher learning and employment.

PO1: The completion of this UG programme will provide a fundamental
knowledge in the core areas of Physics supported by the interdisciplinary
